Kaet Productions began in 2020 with artful experimentations to animate lines, which led to lines dancing to music. In 2021 and 2022, inspired by the philosophy behind the Small File Media Festival, I practiced reducing carbon in my process and in the tiny animated movies I produce. The result has been surprising!—But I’m now in an if-only-I’d-known-this-earlier situation, and in the midst of re-scanning and re-making my videos to meet lower-carbon standards. You’ll find these new versions on Vimeo, a small but growing number of updated animations.

—And while lowering carbon in these animations isn’t going to save the world from climate breakdown, following a low-carbon recipe has made me aware of how often my computer and the platforms I use simply assume I want the highest quality of everything. (Which I don’t.) Through this process, I’ve discovered ways to reduce not only data in my work but also potential wear-and-tear on my devices.
